Atlanna is Aquaman's mother.
In her Silver Age incarnation, Atlanna left Atlantis to travel abroad. She was almost killed in a raging hurricane but her unconscious body was found by Tom Curry. A lonely lighthouse keeper, Tom took her in and nursed her body back to health. The two fell in love and acted as husband and wife. They had a son, Arthur Curry. She decided to keep her origins secret. She died young due to an illness. She confessed the truth about her life on her deathbed. Arthur was only a child when he learned of his Atlantean origins.
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, her history was significantly altered. She was wife to King Trevis who was sterile and thus their marriage was childless. One night in her dreams she was seduced by Atlan, a powerful and ages old Atlantean sorcerer. They gave birth to a son, Orin. But the boy was born with blond hair, considered an ill omen by their people. She was sent into exile and lost contact with her son. She attempted to return to Atlantis but was there captured and imprisoned. Vulko, an elderly scholar, was her only friend in her years of captivity. An adult Orin got the chance to see his mother when he became a fellow prisoner. She died soon after due to illness. This world's Tom Curry had adopted Orin but never met Atlanna.
Later, she was resurrected as a mermaid by Charybdis, who made her that way to mock Aquaman.
During the Emperor Aquaman story in the crossover event Flashpoint, another altered origin for Aquaman's birth (and thus Atlanna) was told. This one combined the silver age and modern age origins.
Instead of being the Queen of Atlantis, Atlanna is the princess who has run away. She meets the solitary lighthouse keeper Tom Curry, the two fall in love and she soon becomes pregnant. Atlantean soldiers sent by her father find her and drag her back to Atlantis, almost killing Tom Curry in the process, she dies giving birth and the unwanted child is abandoned on Mercy Reef. Dolphins (possibly Porm) knowing that the child is the destined ruler of the seas, take him back to his father who brings him up on the surface world. When the King dies and his advisor sends for the child to be returned, Tom Curry mistakes this for an attack and dies fighting the Atlantean soldiers. This version of Aquaman grows up violent and without the compassion he learns from his father.
New 52 Edit
In the continuity wide reboot of the reinvented DC publishing. Atlanna was too re-imagined for an entirely new take on the Aquaman story franchise. When Atlanna first met Thomas Curry she was but a young princess, groomed from an early age to eventually assume the throne to her home nation of Atlantis. One day while out in a vicious storm colloquially named The Raging Eye, she saw a heroic surface dweller risk life and limb in order to help a teetering vessal out of the ocean before it capsized. Moved by the airbreathers chivalry, she rescued him from drowning when Tom himself was thrown overboard in the maelstrom. Nearly a year later, the two fell in love and out of that union; Arthur Curry was conceived. She initially wanted to caste aside her acquittal to the kingdom but was imprisoned for her transgressions yet she eventually escaped while carrying her unborn son to term. Heartbroken at the hard choice ahead of her, Atlanna returned to her duties as next in line for successor-ship of the kingdom; dejectedly leaving behind her first love and infant son. Eventually marrying Orvax Marius, captain of the guard and military commander of the Atlantean Navy, mothering a second son and daughter to her abusive spouse soon after. Orvax was a well known xenophobe who hated the surfacers, he regularly lead raids on land based ships sinking them and killing countless people. When Atlanna scolded him for his behavior he would abuse her in front of their son Orm. Seeking to leave Atlantis and her horrible married life behind to be with Tom and her other son, Orvax cruelly jested he had murdered them in another of his raids. Furious and weighted with sorrow, she killed him out of rage and despair while pleading innocent when news of his death'd spread. Most everyone, Orm included, believed an assassin sent by Orvax's many enemies did him in.
